Another day, another set of wireless earphones vying for a spot in your daily carry arsenal. The Jabra Elite 5 is the latest addition to the Danish company's already extensive line of true wireless earbuds.
I put them through their paces over a few weeks and discovered the following.
Solid construction, solid planning.
The Elite 5 earphones, like all Jabra devices, are well-presented and well-built - just like any other viable alternative on the market. Despite the fact that the case and buds are mostly matte plastic (I received the Titanium Black version), nothing feels cheap to the touch, with the case hinges feeling firm and snappy and the earphones feeling substantial but not too heavy.
The case includes standard USB-C charging, and Jabra claims that the Elite 5s has a lithium-ion battery that provides a total playtime of up to 36 hours with active noise canceling (ANC) turned off, or a total of 28 hours with ANC turned on - both when the stored charge in the case is taken into account. Depending on whether or not ANC is used, the earbuds can last between seven and nine hours on a single charge.
You won't get much in the way of outstanding looks with these buds, but it's always a good idea to have wearable electronics that you can outfit yourself with for any occasion, and that can provide you with great longevity whenever you need them for extended periods of time without access to charging.
The gel tips on the buds fit extremely snugly within your ears in terms of fit and comfort. Depending on how you intend to wear your earphones, this may feel a little uncomfortable for long periods of listening, or it may be a significant benefit if you intend to use them while moving around a bit, such as at the gym or on walks to work.
The fact that these earbuds had true tactile buttons on the sides of each bud meant that when I toggled them to play, pause, or skip music, as well as switch between the primary noise canceling settings while in use, I got proper physical clicks.
With so many wireless earbuds these days relying on problematic touch-sensitive controls to handle functions (such as accidentally skipping a song when I just wanted to click pause), I appreciated the fact that I could press the buttons and always receive a satisfying and palpable response. Furthermore, pressing these buttons caused me no discomfort, which contributes to the Elite 5's ergonomics.
Working with electronic devices.
Bluetooth 5.2 Multipoint connectivity allows for device connectivity, and pairing was a breeze using the Jabra Sound+ app on a smartphone. For Android users, the Elite 5s supports Google's Fast Pair feature.
The Jabra Sound+ app is also required if you want to fully customize the earbuds, with options like button customization, equalization, and even pre-loaded soundscapes making up the majority of what you can play with.
Although the app's editing options were limited, there was little to complain about in terms of functionality, as the app efficiently modified every feature on the linked iPhone 14 Pro.
It doesn't have a lot of bass, but it has enough presence.
In terms of frequency response, the Elite 5's overall sound performance is more neutral. It's not a bass-heavy pair of headphones, but that doesn't mean you can't listen to louder music. More low-end-heavy EDM and rock music had plenty of body and depth, but you won't get the most dynamic sound or separation when compared to other competing models.
This implies that the Jabra Elite 5s will appeal to people who prefer a more balanced overall sound signature, and the level of detail found at the higher end of the frequency curve will likely please you if you prefer a more analytical listening experience.
However, the app's equalization options and presets should give you enough leeway to customize the earbuds to create audio that is more tailored to your preferences.
If I had to pick just one flaw, it would be that the overall sound levels could be a little louder. However, as someone who listens to music at a higher volume than the average listener, this shouldn't be an issue for most users.
Noise cancellation is sufficient.
The Elite 5's active noise cancellation feature was mostly excellent, but I noticed that incidental loud noises — such as vehicle honks or a heavy object dropping nearby — could still be heard while listening to some tunes at full volume.
However, for the purpose of blocking background noises — such as droning on a flight, for example — the buds perform well enough to be worth considering if you're looking for a pair to take on commutes or for blocking out outside noise in an office or study environment.
Finally, I discovered that these earphones performed admirably during phone calls, with the onboard microphone allowing the other person on the line to clearly hear my voice. Furthermore, the ability to change call volumes and enable an auto-answer feature makes this an excellent choice for people who want earbuds for both productivity and listening to music or watching videos.
The decision has been made.
Overall, I'd recommend the Jabra Elite 5s for a variety of reasons, including exceptional build quality, solid physical ergonomics, acceptable customization options, great call performance, and well-rounded sound to round out a set of features that will fit most everyday situations.
While there are certainly other options to consider if you want exceptional audio performance or class-leading noise cancellation, I'd say that these earbuds, which cost RM699 in Malaysia (S$164.80 in Singapore or US$149 in the United States), are definitely worth considering for those looking for a pair for productivity purposes with a well-rounded sound signature.
